I've had a warding of a degraded drive for a short while. Thought I'd try and fix it today and having all sorts of strife with making a backup and with the G raid 1.

theoretically you should be able to remove the disk and the system should rebuild it from the second disk you have in place (IF IT IS RAID 1 and NOT RAID 0)
from wiki:
In RAID 1 (mirroring without parity or striping), data is written identically to multiple drives, thereby producing a "mirrored set"; at least two drives are required to constitute such an array. While more constituent drives may be employed, many implementations deal with a maximum of only two; of course, it might be possible to use such a limited level 1 RAID itself as a constituent of a level 1 RAID, effectively masking the limitation.[citation needed] The array continues to operate as long as at least one drive is functioning. With appropriate operating system support, there can be increased read performance, and only a minimal write performance reduction; implementing RAID 1 with a separate controller for each drive in order to perform simultaneous reads (and writes) is sometimes called multiplexing (or duplexing when there are only two drives).

Yes it is raid 1. I took it to a computer repair man. Worryingly I found out that the second drive was not mirrored and I had paid for this the last time it was serviced...pays to check. Hopefully will get it back fixed.

Dodged a bullet it seems. Only working he'd was f
Ailing...scary thought all that data loss. Yes I have a backup but like most people I rarely check it.

have you looked into getting some of the network attached storage and serving devices, some have programs on them that will automatically back up the data across the network, as well as serve the data up via the WWW using a remote access login - at least thats what my brother was saying.
